Intensive Support Team

The team works with Physiotherapists, Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and other people from the Community Learning Disability Team to help.

Aims and Beliefs

We believe that people who are hard to help can behave in ways that are a problem because of lots of different reasons

We believe that whatever the reason, we can help people to behave differently and enjoy life.

Who Can We Help?

The team helps anyone whose behaviour can risk their own safety or the safety of others. We also support people who can behave in ways which are limiting their ability to be independent or involved in the community. Problematic behaviour can often affect a persons opportunities.

However, by working together with a person and their supporters, we can help to work out why the problems are happening and how we can support the person in a way that enables them to be included within our community, have their own rights and choices, and to be as independent as they are able to be.

When You Meet Us

The team will meet together with the person and their supporters to talk about the problems they are having. They listen to what the person and their supporters think about the problem as well as thinking about several other areas, including the persons: diagnoses, development, experiences (including what helps and what makes the problem worse), social circumstances and environment. Through this process we work with the person and their supporters to think about what exactly the problem is and why the problem is happening.

Once we have an understanding of what the problem is and why it is happening. We think about what might help.

We offer tailor made support which may include:

  • Medication
  • Psychotherapy
  • Communication Aides
  • Staff Training & Support
  • Devising and Modelling behavioural guidelines
  • Working alongside staff in different settings
  • Recommending environmental changes
  • Linking people with support services
  • Crisis assessments and interventions

The support is then regularly reviewed to make sure that it is helping the person and their supporters.
